The difference between an update and an upgrade

Software Update

Updates are a fix or an enhancement to a product. They are generally downloadable and free. and are portrayed as a change to the right part of the version number. e.g. 1.1, 1.2 etc. For instance, registered users of SWF Bundler 2.0 are entitled to SWF Bundler 2.1 free of charge.

Product Upgrade

If you own a SWF Bundler product, you can buy a new version of your product at a discounted price. Upgrades are depicted by a change in the left part of the version number. e.g. 2.0, 3.0 etc. Usually previous version license owners can upgrade their copies of the software for a special price which is about 30%-60% of the purchase price.

Software updates are free, unlike upgrades which normally are paid-for.
